Leo Lamelas To Start From the Pole Position

BOWMANVILLE, On. (July 7, 2018) – Charles Wicht Racing/Performance Tech Motorsports’ Leo Lamelas won the pole position for tomorrow’s IMSA Prototype Challenge Powered by Mazda race.

The weekend started out strong for the No. 7 CWR Liger LMP3 with a promoter test and two practice sessions. The team used the extra practice time to make small changes to both the car and Lamelas’ driving style. The added focus on these details would inadvertently lead to Lamelas pole-winning fast lap.

“It’s been a really great weekend so far,” said Team Principal Charles Wicht. “Leo has been strong all year and it’s been incredible to watch him improve. We’re all really looking forward to the race tomorrow and the rest of the season.”

For the first time this season Lamelas will be joined by Roman De Angelis. De Angelis drove a LMP3 for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway, landing himself on the top step of the podium. Aside from IMSA Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda, De Angelis competes fulltime in IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama where he currently sits second overall in both championships.

“We’re excited to welcome Roman to the program this weekend,”said  Performance Tech Motorsports Team Principal Brent O’Neill. “Leo has always been strong, which he proved with his pole today. I think Leo and Roman will be a potent pair together and I’m excited to see what they can do tomorrow.”

The No. 7 currently sits second overall in the championship, just five points behind first. With the lead in striking distance this weekend is a crucial championship turning point. Both the drivers and the crew are feeling confident headed into tomorrow’s race.

Performance Tech Motorsports saw success as well with Cameron Cassels No. 75 LMP3 qualifying tenth. Dr. Robert Masson qualified his No. 11 Masson Spine Institute MPC in the second position. Stephen Dawes landed his A.I.G. Technologies No. 22 in sixth. Howard Jacobs rounded out the pack with a seventh place qualifying in his Cardio Access No. 77.

Race Day is Sunday, July 8, with the green flag set to drop at 10:30 a.m. The one hour and 45-minute sprint race is the fourth of six installments in the 2018 calendar season. The race will be broadcast live on imsatv.imsa.com followed by a delayed FOX Sports 2 broadcast Thursday, July 26, 8 p.m. ET.
